THE TABLE SPREAD
FOOD PANTRY

Memphis, TN has the highest poverty rate in the nation and a large percentage of Memphis residents experience food insecurity. To tackle this problem, students played an active leadership role in the process of expanding the Midtown Mosque’s pantry capacity through a partnership with the Mid-South Food Bank and the opening of a new 900-sq foot food distribution facility. Students volunteer monthly distributing food at Midtown Mosque and Masjid Al-Muminoon food pantries.

Ayisha Anwara Community Garden

In early 2015, the Ayisha Anwara Community Garden was established to address blight and other concerns in the Klondike neighborhood. The garden and orchard provides access to fresh fruits and vegetables to local residents, many of whom lack reliable access to grocery stores. The garden is also tackling food security in the area by creating a renewable source of fresh, healthful food. The students take on the responsibility of maintaining the garden, planting seeds, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and distributing the produce to the community.
