The Table Spread Food Pantry

Memphis, TN has the highest poverty rate in the nation and a large percentage of Memphis residents experience food insecurity. To tackle this problem, students played an active leadership role in the process of expanding the Midtown Mosque’s pantry capacity through a partnership with the Mid-South Food Bank and the opening of a new 900-sq foot food distribution facility. Students volunteer monthly distributing food at Midtown Mosque and Masjid Al-Muminoon food pantries.

Ayisha Anwara Community Garden

In early 2015, the Ayisha Anwara Community Garden was established to address blight and other concerns in the Klondike neighborhood. The garden and orchard provides access to fresh fruits and vegetables to local residents, many of whom lack reliable access to grocery stores. The garden is also tackling food security in the area by creating a renewable source of fresh, healthful food. The students take on the responsibility of maintaining the garden, planting seeds, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and distributing the produce to the community.

FARM (Feeding America Rights Movement) Project

In response to COVID-19, Miraaj Academy received an emergency grant from the Islamic Relief Organization (IRUSA) to launch a virtual service learning project for youth between the ages of 13-15. The FARM grant funded food security projects implemented by students across the nation. The purpose of the FARM program is to help young people understand they can contribute to the change and assist in providing food security for those impacted by the COVID-19. Praise be to Allah, the program was such a success that it was extended this year and open to all youth 13-15.

Here are some of the project the students planned
